Sambucus nigra 'Black Lace' C5
Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’ is a fast-growing, deciduous elder valued for its finely cut, deep purple-black foliage that provides strong contrast in borders. In early summer, flattened clusters of soft pink flowers appear above the dark leaves, and these may be followed by black berries later in the season. Fully hardy and reliable in Irish gardens, it performs best in full sun or light shade on moist but well-drained, reasonably fertile soil; the richest leaf colour develops in good light. Use as a striking focal shrub or to add texture and depth in mixed plantings; prune lightly after flowering or in late winter to maintain size and shape.
To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
