Polygala myrtifolia
Polygala myrtifolia
Polygala myrtifolia (myrtle-leaved milkwort) is an evergreen, bushy shrub valued for its neat, glossy green foliage and abundant purple, pea-like blooms produced over a long season in mild conditions. In Ireland it is best sited in full sun with shelter, ideally in very mild coastal areas; elsewhere, grow in a large container so it can be protected from frost in winter. Provide well-drained, moderately fertile, neutral to acidic soil (avoid chalk). Expect around 2m in height and spread in favourable Irish gardens, with flowering typically from late spring into early autumn. Lightly trim after the main flush of flowers to maintain shape and encourage further blooming.
To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
