Penstemon Garnet
Penstemon Garnet
Penstemon ‘Andenken an Friedrich Hahn’ (syn. ‘Garnet’) is a reliable, upright, semi-evergreen perennial bearing long racemes of deep carmine-red, tubular flowers with paler throats from early summer into autumn. It thrives in moderately fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or light shade, and is excellent in mixed borders where regular deadheading extends the display; leave top growth over winter and cut back in spring. Attractive to pollinators and awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit, it typically reaches about 1m tall and 50cm wide in Irish gardens.
To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
