Hydrangea macrophylla (white-flowered) is a deciduous shrub prized for its large, showy white summer flowerheads set against bold green foliage. Well suited to Irish gardens for borders or large containers, it thrives in a moisture-retentive, fertile, well‑drained soil and performs best in sun or light shade. Flower buds form on the previous year’s growth, so avoid hard pruning; instead, remove dead or damaged stems and deadhead after winter to a strong pair of buds. Keep well watered in dry spells and protect developing buds from late spring frosts to ensure reliable displays from mid to late summer.
