Hydrangea macr. Red

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Red’ is a deciduous hydrangea valued for its bold red flower heads in summer through early autumn, set against lush green foliage. Best in partial shade with morning sun or dappled light, it thrives in moist, well‑drained, fertile, humus‑rich soil and benefits from shelter from cold, drying winds. Mature plants typically reach 90–180 cm tall and wide, making a striking feature in borders or large containers, and the showy blooms are excellent for cutting. Note that flower colour is influenced by soil chemistry: red tones are strongest in neutral to alkaline conditions; in more acidic soils the flowers may shift toward purple‑blue.
