Hydrangea macrophylla (pink) is a classic, deciduous shrub prized for its large summer flowerheads and lush green foliage, ideal for brightening mixed borders or a generous container in Irish gardens. Flowers are typically pink on neutral to alkaline soils, while more acidic soils can shift blooms towards blue tones. It prefers a moisture-retentive, fertile, well-drained soil in sun or light shade, with consistent watering during dry spells. Leave faded flowerheads over winter to protect developing buds, then in early spring remove them to the first strong pair of buds and thin out any dead or weak stems; avoid hard pruning as this species flowers on last year’s growth. Expect an eventual height and spread around 1–2m in suitable conditions, and provide shelter from cold, drying winds.
