Hydrangea (JG) macrophylla pink P23

Hydrangea (JG) macrophylla pink P23

A classic deciduous shrub for Irish gardens, Hydrangea macrophylla (pink forms) produces showy clusters of pink flowers from mid to late summer into early autumn, set against bold green foliage. It thrives in moist but well-drained, fertile, humus-rich soil in sun or light shade; in sunnier positions, steady moisture gives the best display. Expect around 1–2 m in height and spread at maturity. Leave spent flowerheads on the plant over winter to help protect developing buds, then in spring remove old heads to the first strong pair of buds and thin out one or two of the oldest stems. Flower colour is influenced by soil pH: pink tones are maintained on neutral to alkaline soils, while more acidic soils can shift blooms towards blue.

To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
