FATSIA japonica
FATSIA japonica
Fatsia japonica is an architectural evergreen shrub valued in Irish gardens for its large, glossy, palmate leaves and its ability to thrive in shade. Best in a sheltered spot, it prefers moist but well‑drained, fertile soil (loam, sand or clay). Clusters of small, creamy‑white spherical flowers appear in autumn, adding late‑season interest. Expect an eventual size of around 2.5–4m high and wide, making a bold focal plant for shaded borders and courtyards.
To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
