Cortaderia selleona
Cortaderia selleona
Pampas grass is a dramatic, long-lived, clump-forming ornamental grass for Irish gardens, prized for tall, silky flower plumes and strong architectural presence. It forms dense tussocks of rough-edged green leaves and performs best in full sun and in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Flower plumes are typically silvery white and appear from late summer into autumn, standing well through winter for structure. Ideal as a focal point, screen or backdrop in larger borders and gravel plantings. In late winter or early spring, wear gloves and carefully remove spent flower stems and any dead or damaged leaves to refresh the plant.
To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
