Canna Island Red Velvet (17cm Pot)
Canna ‘Island Red Velvet’ is a bold, rhizomatous perennial grown for its vivid red flowers from summer into autumn, carried above broad, tropical-looking green foliage. In Ireland it performs best in full sun with shelter from strong winds and in fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Ideal as an architectural focal point for borders or large containers, it responds to generous watering and feeding in the growing season and regular deadheading to extend the display. Protect from frost by lifting and storing the rhizomes once the foliage is blackened by cold, or mulch deeply in very mild areas.
To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
