Astrantia major 'Hadspen Blood'

Astrantia major 'Hadspen Blood'

Astrantia major 'Hadspen Blood' is a clump-forming, deciduous perennial prized for its rich, deep red pincushion-like flower heads held above fresh green, palmate foliage. Flowering reliably from early to late summer, it thrives in Ireland’s cooler, moist conditions, doing best in sun or light shade and in moist, humus-rich, moderately fertile soil that does not dry out. Excellent for informal and cottage-style borders, it weaves beautifully among other perennials and is valued for cutting and drying. Deadhead to prolong the display, mulch to conserve moisture, and divide congested clumps in spring. Expect an eventual height around 60–90cm, making it ideal for mid-border planting and for supporting bees and other pollinators.

To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
